Standards and integration
Raising standards and protecting women
The Home Office’s 2018 independent review found that over 90% of people using Sharia councils were women seeking a divorce. It also found that practice varied, and that some of it was poor and discriminatory. We offer these organisations guidance and training to work fairly, safely and within English law.
- A clear code of good practice organisations can adopt
- Fair, consistent treatment, with women’s rights protected
- Proper record-keeping and safe referral into the law
- Safeguarding at the centre of every process
- Working alongside the civil courts, never as an alternative
Our aim is for religious bodies to work within English law, not as a parallel system.
